Surgical Approach
This model was created as a result of the combined efforts of the art team at PrecisionOS to develop a more efficient pipeline. Prior to my joining the team a surgical approach mesh like this would be designed as a one-off asset and then rigged with the patient. After I started I got to work on modeling the whole skeleton and the major muscles, ligaments, nerves, and blood vessels creating a large library of assets we could pull from. Each model was subsequently added to a default patient rig by a fellow artist, which was then posed in various surgical positions.
In this case it allowed us pose healthy, individual anatomical structures (scapula, humerus, supraspinatus, biceps, etc) then bring them back to ZBrush where I merged them into one piece. With a single mesh, rather than many separate parts, I was able to create a more cohesive, realistic surgical view of the approach. As a bonus, because we still had the original, separate structures we could still do gameplay tricks like highlighting and collision warnings without sacrificing visual fidelity.
